Remember a few months ago when Marine Captain Matthew Phelps proposed to his boyfriend, Ben Schock, inside the White House and he said yes?

Well, they tied the knot this past weekend!

I had the honor of meeting Matthew at a PFLAG meeting last year.  Such an amazing and inspirational man.

The Poster. 

This will be my last post about the poster.  After this, I am done talking about it.  You can keep reblogging the images, my other posts, sending me messages, but I am not going to respond to anything else after this.

As most of us know, bullying is a very serious issue in the LGBT community, especially among youth.  Can you imagine if that was my first rally?  My first poster?  My first time standing up for equality?  And I received those messages?  Thankfully, it wasn’t my first rally.  And I can take the heat.  But what if it was an ally who wasn’t as secure or confident, someone fighting for your rights, and you bullied them like that.  Bullied them for standing up FOR YOU.  We know what can happen with bullying.  We know the seriousness and the dangers.  Especially in this community, we have lost too many youth because of it.  It’s incredibly upsetting with messages I received.  A lot of you should be ashamed.  You want everyone to treat you with respect, yet you don’t practice what you preach.

I understand, the words and the subject of my poster could have been different.  I understand why people were upset.  But you don’t know me.  You saw the poster and assumed I was fetishizing homosexuality with the gay characters I used.  You assumed I wanted marriage equality so my favorite characters on a television show could get married.  You assumed I had no other stake in marriage equality except to see my OTPs get married.  But I was at a marriage equality rally for real people.  I wasn’t at Comic Con, and I wasn’t standing outside the Paramount Lot.  I was fighting for everyone.  Just like I have for years.  And just like I will continue to do until there is equality for all.

I have apologized twice if people were offended by the poster.  But I am not going to apologize for the poster itself.  I don’t regret making it.  Call me a bad ally, fine.  But I know who I am.  And I know that the poster helped a lot of people.  I have received so many messages from people saying thank you.  People telling me that the couples on my poster have made it easier for them to introduce gay people to their families.  That Kurt Hummel gave them courage to come out to their parents.  That Bryan and David have helped them realize that they too can start a family, even if they are gay.  Messages from young gay kids still in the closet, thanking me.  That is what is important.

We are all here for the same reason, equality.  Fighting each other instead of the opponents is a waste.  Aim that energy at the Westboro Baptist church.  Aim it at Fred Phelps.  Aim it at all the right wing republicans.  Aim it at Exodus International.  But don’t aim it at each other.  We need to lift each other up, especially right now, if we want to win.

On a side note, many of you made comments about the “weird nun” to my left in the photo from Ryan Murphy’s tweet.  That is actually my friend, Sister Ida Know.  She is a part of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.  I have to admit, I was a little surprised how many people who claimed to know so much about the gay community, had no idea why she was dressed like she was.  I guess a lot of us still have things to learn.  Check it out: Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

3/26/2013- NBC Nightly News “TV’s impact on the gay marriage debate”

Here is it, are you ready? 

I am very sorry to anyone that was offended by the sign.

 It was meant to be fun, campy,  but also serious.  I was hoping people could relate to these characters they watch every week on television, especially if they do not know any gay people in real life.  I have been fighting for marriage equality for years now, at rallies and events.  I know that these protests can be somber and sad at times.  I was hoping that my sign would put a smile on someone’s face.  It sparked a lot of discussion here on Tumblr, Twitter, and in person.  If people are talking about LGBT rights, then we are moving in the right direction. 

You can tear me down all you want.  If it makes you feel like a better person to put someone else down, okay then.  Just know that in my heart, I want equal rights for everyone.  Even all of my anon haters.
